Sunflower oil is becoming rare, as most of it comes from Ukraine, which is the world’s leading exporter. A shortage that affects small French producers.

With the war in Ukraine, sunflower oil has become a rare and demanded commodity. In a grocery store near Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin)sunflower oil sales have tripled. Right here, no shortage in sight, as the manager only offers locally produced artisanal oils. “There is no supply problem at the moment, we are not dependent on what is happening in the world”explains Christian Ehrartmanager of the grocery store.

In Vienne, Jean-François lidon cultivates, produces and implements bottle 12,000 liters of artisanal sunflower oil each year. In recent weeks, demand has exploded. With only 60 liters produced in 24 hours, the stock will soon run out. “We have 300 liters left for 15 days, whereas usually I would have had 1,000 liters in advance”explains Jean-François lidon. An unprecedented shortage for the producer, in 17 years of activity. To be more independent and no longer import sunflower, France should produce 300,000 tonnes more each year.
