Short course swimming | Mac Neil wins the 50m backstroke and lowers his score

(Melbourne) Canada’s Maggie Mac Neil again won the 50m backstroke at the World Short Course Swimming Championships on Friday, lowering her mark in the event.


Mac Neil, 22, clocked 25.25 seconds, lowering her own mark by two hundredths of a second. She was ahead of American Claire Curzan (25.54) and Australian Mollie O’Callaghan (25.61).

” I am glad. I knew it would be difficult to beat my personal best, but I really wanted to improve and I’m glad I did, said Mac Neil. I learned so much here, and I think I managed to sort out all my little mistakes tonight. »

Kylie Masse of La Salle, Ont., was fourth in 25.81 seconds. She was a silver medalist last year on this distance, and was crowned reigning world champion in the long course.

Mac Neil provided one of three medals for Canada on day four of the world short course championships, bringing the country’s total tally to nine (2-2-5) at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Center .

It was Mac Neil’s fourth medal (2-2-0) at these Worlds: she also won gold in the 50m butterfly on Wednesday and competed in the bronze-medal relays in the women’s 4x100m freestyle and 4x50m mixed medley.

In addition, Canadians Javier Acevedo and Finlay Knox won silver and bronze medals in the 100 m individual medley. Acevedo hit the wall in 51.05 seconds, just 0.08 seconds behind Italy’s Thomas Ceccon, to lower his own Canadian record. Knox also swam under Acevedo’s old record, clocking 51.10 for third place.

Among the women, Quebecer Marie-Sophie Harvey finished eighth in the 100 m individual medley in 59.11 seconds.

The short course world championships will continue until Sunday.
