Shopify will oppose a federal tax request

Shopify will oppose a request from the Canada Revenue Agency, which demands that it turn over six years of documents for Canadian stores using its e-commerce platform, the CEO of the established company said on Monday. in Ottawa.

In a post on TwitterTobi Lütke noted that the request from the federal tax department seemed to be too broad in scope.

Federal Court documents show Ottawa began requesting records from Shopify last April to verify that Canadian merchants are indeed complying with the Income Tax Act and Excise Tax Act . All parties involved are asking for a one-day hearing in the case to take place between February 13 and March 17, 2024.

Shopify is going through tough times right now. The company has laid off thousands of employees over the past two years and has seen its stock plummet after Mr Lütke admitted to overestimating his company’s growth in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
