Shooting during the Grand Prix | The Sasha café-bar will be able to reopen its doors

Café-bar Sasha, closed following a gang-related shooting in June, will be able to welcome customers again under certain conditions.

During an emergency summons to the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux (RACJ) on June 22, the liquor license of the restaurant located on avenue Bélanger, in Saint-Léonard, had been temporarily suspended. The presence of customers was also prohibited. The establishment will now be able to reopen its doors from July 10.

The administrative judge Marie-Jeanne Duval endorsed the proposal of the two parties in this case.

On the night of June 19, the police intervened for shots fired from a vehicle (drive by shooting) occurred near the Sasha café-bar.

A total of 11 casings were found at the crime scene. The establishment, where a party was held on the occasion of the Grand Prix of Canada, was then crowded.

The injured, two men aged 24 and 28, were known to the police and have several criminal records. One of the victims is also linked to street gangs in Montreal North.

Several conditions

In addition to having to install a surveillance camera system, the owner of the Saint-Léonard café-bar has agreed that a security guard will be present on Friday and Saturday evenings, as well as during events likely to attract crowd. Among other things, Joseph Cecere will have to ensure that a doorman uses a metal detector when customers enter and leave his establishment on weekends.

He also agrees to refuse access to his restaurant to anyone displaying a sign or clothing indicating affiliation with a criminal group.
