Shooting at the American embassy in Lebanon, no victims

Gunshots targeted the American embassy in Lebanon, located in a suburb of Beirut, on Wednesday evening, without causing any casualties, a spokesperson told AFP on Thursday.

“At 10:37 p.m. (0737 GMT), gunfire was reported near the entrance to the U.S. Embassy,” embassy spokesman Jake Nelson said.

“There were no injuries,” he added, specifying that the embassy was “in close contact” with the Lebanese security forces.

The complex housing the American embassy, extremely secure and surrounded by Lebanese army roadblocks, is located in Awkar, a suburb north of Beirut.

The incident coincided with the anniversary of the 1984 car bomb explosion outside the US embassy in this area, which left 11 dead and dozens injured.

The embassy was established in these premises north of Beirut after a suicide attack which destroyed the chancellery in April 1983 and left 63 dead, in the middle of the civil war (1975-1990).
