Sherbrooke, the solidarity “Gallic village” of Estrie

Québec solidaire is taking more root in Estrie as incumbent Christine Labrie was re-elected in Sherbrooke, winning against her rival, the former mayor of Longueuil and star candidate for the Coalition avenir Québec, Caroline St-Hilaire. In an ocean of pale blue in Estrie and more widely in southern Quebec, the riding of Sherbrooke thus remains the “little Gallic village” that the CAQ still cannot conquer.

From the start of the campaign, the fight was announced to be very tight between these two candidates who invested a lot in the field of the constituency. It is Québec solidaire that will have finally won the duel. “[La CAQ] not'[a] failed to dislodge me, I have every intention of continuing to do my work even if it bothers me. I will never let go,” she told the To have to. In a lively bar on rue Wellington in Sherbrooke, Ms. Labrie was visibly moved to have once again had the renewed confidence of the electors of her riding. “It confirms to me that my way of working and the values that I carry are those of Sherbrooke residents,” she added, satisfied. However, she says she is “tremendously” worried about the direction the CAQ is taking. “We are going to need a strong opposition and a reform of the ballot, I will be there, fighting for that.”

But his left-wing party saw a disappointment, however, he who did not manage to make a splash by winning the riding of Saint-François, on which he had placed a lot of hope. It was indeed the outgoing CAQ MP, Geneviève Hébert, who was re-elected after a fairly tight fight during which her main rival from Québec solidaire, the former director of public health in Estrie, Mélissa Généreux followed him closely.

In the other ridings of the Eastern Townships, all the outgoing deputies wore the colors of the CAQ and they were all re-elected. Thus, André Bachand was re-elected in Richmond with an overwhelming majority, Isabelle Charest won with a very comfortable lead in Brome-Missisquoi, Gilles Bélanger finished first with a strong majority and François Jacques regained his seat in Megantic. Note: with the exception of this last riding, the candidates who finished second in the various counties of Estrie all wore the colors of Québec solidaire.
