Sherbrooke: the Grandes-Fourches bridge will still be delayed

The construction of the new Grandes-Fourches bridge, the largest construction site currently on the territory of the City of Sherbrooke, is likely to last a little longer.

The contamination is greater than expected, revealed the City during a first media visit to see the progress of the work on Friday.

Estimated at more than $40 million, the new road and bridge will pass much more through the largest construction site currently on the territory of the City of Sherbrooke and downtown than the one that was used before. “Our vision is for the street to be inhabited with shops, restaurants and bars. There will be easy accessibility with lanes for cars, cyclists and pedestrians,” Caroline Gravel, director of the Urban Infrastructure Department, told TVA Nouvelles.

The opening is hoped perhaps for the summer of 2023, but the fall of 2023 would be more realistic according to Ms. Gravel. Unpleasant surprises related to decontamination have delayed the progress of the work and have already cost Sherbrooke residents more than $3 million.
