Shemseddine, teenager beaten to death in Viry-Châtillon, was buried in Essonne

Tears and white roses for Shemseddine: the funeral of the 15-year-old teenager beaten to death on Thursday in Viry-Châtillon took place on Tuesday, against a backdrop of vigorous political debate around violence between young people. At the beginning of the afternoon, dozens of relatives, neighbors, middle and high school students and residents of this reputedly quiet town in Essonne crowded in front of the small wooden mosque in the neighboring town of Savigny-sur-Orge to pay their respects. a final tribute to “Shems”, as his friends called him.

In the crowd, Meriem, a 27-year-old from Castelviroise, said she came in “support” to the victim’s family, whom she did not know. “The prayer was very moving. Hearing the pain of the family hurts my heart”reacted Sajida, a 17-year-old high school student. “It’s very serious what happened, but above all it’s a surprise”confided Karim, 16, who came to attend the prayer with friends. “We don’t often see this kind of aggression here”added this former student of Les Sablons college, where Shemseddine attended school.

A stir throughout the country

After the religious ceremony, the teenager was buried in the Morsang-sur-Orge cemetery, during a ceremony hidden from view, in the presence of at least a hundred people, white rose in hand. In tears, around ten teenagers left the scene supported by adults at the end of the funeral. A white march in memory of the victim will be organized Friday afternoon in the streets of the city, according to the centrist mayor of Viry-Châtillon, Jean-Marie Vilain.

The death at the hands of Shemseddine in front of his school, a few days after another violent attack which targeted a schoolgirl in Montpellier, caused turmoil throughout the country. Four young men were indicted for murder during the night from Sunday to Monday. Two of them – a 20-year-old adult and a minor – were imprisoned, the other two, minors, temporarily incarcerated until a contradictory debate scheduled for Wednesday before the judge of freedoms and detention.
