In August, we met Georgianna Fischer, a 20-year-old American. She is part of a group of 16 young people who won a historic environmental trial in the United States. These young people accused the state of Montana of not respecting their right to a “clean and healthy world” by supporting oil and coal production. And the judge ruled in their favor! This has never been seen before!
Why did you and other young people decide to pursue
sue the State of Montana?
I felt frustrated seeing the government not taking action on climate change. I wanted to bring about concrete change. The environment is a vital resource for everyone and we must protect it. Since we cannot vote before the age of 18, this lawsuit allowed us to have a way to participate in our future.
Did you get help from adults?
Of course ! We have received support from a full team of lawyers and other professionals. They guided us to ensure our voices were heard.
Can you explain the judge’s decision to us?
His judgment reaffirms our right to a clean and healthy environment. He also says that several actions by the Montana government that aim to promote fossil fuels are unconstitutional, meaning they do not comply with state law. The government must therefore put an end to these actions.
How did you react to this victory?
I was at the dentist, cleaning my teeth, when I heard the news! It was an unexpected moment and I felt a lot of emotions. Above all, I was filled with happiness and great relief.
Have you experienced the effects of climate change yourself?
I’ve noticed that summer is getting hotter and drier, leading to wildfires. But during my testimony, I mainly focused on the changes in my sport, cross-country skiing. I wanted to show how I can’t train or compete because sometimes there’s no snow and it’s too hot.
What impact do you think this victory will have on the future?
I am convinced that this trial can serve as an inspiring model. This victory can have repercussions around the world by showing that it is important to act. And I hope people, children and adults, continue to speak out!
