Nicknamed queen of self-deprecation in Telematinthis September 29, 2023, Chantal Goya answered questions from Damien Thévenot, on France 2. And she explained to him where his formula came from: “I went from idiot to icon”which she released in 2018, on the show “Boomerang” by Augustin Trapenard, on France Inter.
The gay world called him “icon”
The 81-year-old actress and singer assured: “The word stupid is a bit what the very trendy intellectual journalists said about me […] they didn’t understand how I went from Godard (Jean-Luc) to Bécassine. That was mostly the story. And with that, I accepted their criticism because they were still intelligent.”
The wife of Jean-Jacques Debout adds in particular: “I remember a journalist called Jean-Michel Gravier who went crazy because he liked me so much in Godard (in 1966, she was in “Masculin feminine” by Jean-Luc Godard, editor’s note) and in Bécassine (in 1979), it went out of his head, it wasn’t normal”.
The big turning point for Chantal Goya came well after, she remembers, when the gay world dubbed her. From then on, we called him “icon,” she said this Friday morning. And Damien Thévenot recalls that in 2001, director Gabriel Aghion (“Soft pedal“) had him play his own role in the film”Absolutely fabulous” (with Josiane Balasko and Nathalie Baye).
Letter of nobility
The host of France Télé quotes the title “Bécassine is my cousin” from the original soundtrack and comments: “And there it really was… there your career suddenly took off again. In the radios; the nightclubs.” Opposite, Chantal Goya, delighted, had fun: “all the connected and intelligent people, I had become intelligent and an icon”. All this while agreeing to “Play the game”in a Bécassine costume (designed by Jean-Paul Gautier, all the same).
