After the daughter of La France Insoumise deputies Alexis Corbière and Raquel Garrido was taken into police custody on Tuesday for “apology of terrorism and public provocation”, her parents reacted Thursday January 18 in a press release. They assure that she “hates and condemns racism and anti-Semitism”. Their daughter will have to “respond, like any litigant, before the courts”they specify, while declaring that they accept “without blinking[ur] public trial before the ‘parents’ court'”.

Videos and photos “attributed to [leur] girl” broadcast on social networks were the subject of reports to the National Center for the Fight against Online Hate, leading to the opening of an investigation by the Paris prosecutor’s office and a police custody and search of the family home on Tuesday . In a video published on X, dating after the October 7 attack, she said in particular: “I’m anti-Semitic, I don’t give a damn. I assume…”.

“It is essential to make a distinction between us and our children”

“First of all, we want to express with emotion our understanding and affection to all the people shocked by reading or listening to the words or expressions that are broadcast in this affair”write Alexis Corbière and Raquel Garrido.

They then defend their daughter: “It emerges from our conversations with [elle] that she hates and condemns racism and anti-Semitism”. They denounce the denunciation tweets of far-right activists, who targeted her “because she is our daughter”.

“Unfortunately, the investigation, subject to secrecy, was not protected. As of Wednesday morning at 10 a.m., the press was informed”, they lament. Furthermore, they judge “indispensable to make a strict distinction between us […] as leading political figures […] and our three children” who must “benefit from total protection of their private life”.

“However, expressions which have been attributed to him […]she must answer, like any litigant, before the courts”, assure Alexis Corbière and Raquel Garrido. And to add: “Today, we are faced with a family and parental ordeal. We accept without batting an eyelid the public trial before the ‘parents’ court’.”
