A seaplane was seen falling over the Saint-Maurice River, before collapsing there, around 3:45 p.m. Electric cables were damaged in its fall, said the spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), Nicolas Scholtus.

More than 5,000 Hydro-Quebec customers were without power in Shawinigan-Sud at the end of the afternoon, according to the Info-pannes website, but power was restored in the evening.

The fire department intervened with the Sûreté du Québec for nautical assistance. SQ divers were also on their way to the scene of the accident on Sunday afternoon.

The 63-year-old man was rescued and taken to hospital in critical condition in the late afternoon before succumbing to his injuries in the evening. The SQ does not know if other people were on board the aircraft.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada and the Coroner’s Office have been notified of the accident. SQ major crime investigators have been assigned to the case.
