On July 4, several swimmers were attacked by a shark in Texas. The south of the country has already experienced 15 attacks since the beginning of the year.

On a beach in Texas (United States), a handful of bathers gently bring a woman back to shore. She has just been bitten on the leg by a shark. She is alive, but seriously injured. Just a few meters away, the animal is still prowling in the turquoise waters. Emergency services immediately evacuate the beach. A helicopter is tasked with tracking the shark. On this national holiday in the United States, the beach is crowded. A few moments earlier, other bathers had also been affected.

This is the 15th attack since the beginning of the year in the southern United States. In June, several swimmers were already injured in Florida. According to specialists, sharks most often attack humans by mistake, due to their poor vision. “These are not really attacks, sharks bite to find out what is in the water. Often, it is the wind that brings them closer to the beach”says Jim Pigg, a firefighter from South Padre, Texas.

Shark attacks remain rare. In 2023, there were 69 worldwide, about half of them in the United States.
