Shapovalov quickly eliminated at Roland-Garros

The Canadian Denis Shapovalov quickly packed up at Roland-Garros.

The Ontarian lost to Dane Holger Rune 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (4) in the first round of the Paris tournament.

Shapovalov tried to resist in the third set forcing the tiebreaker, but he quickly trailed 3-1 and couldn’t close the gap, sending the match point out.

Shapovalov was seeded 14th at the clay-court tournament while Rune is unseeded.

It was the first time the 23-year-old Shapovalov faced 19-year-old Rune, who is ranked 40th in the world.

Shapovalov tallied six aces against Rune, but the young Dane dominated in virtually every other category.

Rune maintained a better service success percentage, making five of his nine break points and winning 64 points on serve to Shapovalov’s 46, who also had 53 unforced errors.

Rune won the Munich tournament earlier this month, notably beating Alexander Zverev in the first round. He also won the junior tournament at Roland-Garros in 2019.
