Actors who wield guns on film sets should be trained for safety reasons, Shannon Lee, sister of actor Brandon Lee, who was fatally injured in 1993 on set, said on Monday (Nov. 1).

“They do not receive training in the handling of weapons. (…) I think that safety training (should be) compulsory so that the actors can check the weapons themselves, know how to use them adequately and ensure the safety of others “Shannon Lee told AFP at the Asian International Film Festival (FICA) in Los Angeles.

Martial arts legend Bruce Lee’s daughter said to herself “frustrated” by the tragedy that occurred during the filming of Rust, where cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed by a bullet fired accidentally by actor Alec Baldwin. “This shouldn’t have happened again”, lamented the sister of Brandon Lee, who died at 28 after being shot and wounded during the filming of the film The Crow in 1993.

Reacting to Alec Baldwin’s comments on Saturday that“there was a one in a trillion chance that this would happen”, Shannon Lee retorted: “I listened to it, but it didn’t, it’s happened before.”

Shannon Lee, an actress herself, notably proposes that firearms be replaced on film sets by dummy weapons and visual and sound effects. However, she stresses, “I don’t think it’s a popular idea in the industry right now.”
