Shanghai Masters 1000 | Ben Shelton eliminates Janik Sinner and advances to the quarters

(Shanghai) American Ben Shelton, ranked 20e at the ATP, qualified Tuesday for the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters 1000 after his victory against the 4e world, the Italian Janik Sinner 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7/5).

Sinner won the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing last Wednesday against Russian Daniil Medvedev, world No.3.

Shelton was able to rely on his serve to win in the tiebreaker of the last set.

This is the first time that the 21-year-old has managed to reach the quarter-finals in a tournament of this category.

He will face his compatriot Sebastian Korda who earlier defeated the Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo 7-5, 7-6 (8/6)

Another member of the top 10 was released on Tuesday in Shanghai as the Hungarian Fabian Marozsan, 91e world, dominated the 9e in the ATP ranking, the Norwegian Casper Ruud 7-6 (7/3), 3-6, 6-4.

This is the second victory over a member of the top 10 this season for the 24-year-old, who beat Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, then world No.2, last May in Rome.

In the next round, Fabian Marozsan will meet the winner of the round of 16 between the Pole Hubert Hurkacz and the Chinese Zhang Zhizhen.
