The number of food insecure people in the world is more than two billion; the number of those affected by hunger is around 800 million; 150 million children are stunted in growth and development due to a chronic lack of essential nutrients; 45 million children under 5 suffer from wasting, the deadliest form of malnutrition; this year, among other things because of COVID and the war in Ukraine, there is a risk of half a million people literally dying of hunger.
Estimated costs of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar — construction of stadiums, metro lines, avenues, etc. ; team travel expenses; plane tickets, hotel and restaurant expenses for spectators, etc. — is around 220 billion dollars, or 1,500 dollars for each of the 45 million children mentioned above. Which would have allowed them to have a completely normal life… During the 90 minutes that a football match lasts, 65 people die of hunger on our beautiful planet… in front of the total indifference of the football players of the cup, the tens of thousands of spectators and millions of people glued to their televisions to follow the games… It’s really 220 billion dollars well spent, in all humanity, generosity, fraternity…
