After long days, the Bishops’ Conference finally made its decision on November 8 concerning compensation for the damage of the 330,000 victims of sexual abuse within the Church. One of the first measures will be financial, as expected.
A few weeks after the publication of the Sauvé report which listed no less than 330,000 victims of sexual abuse in the Church, the first measures finally fell. After having expressed their forgiveness, the Bishops will now proceed to the cashier. The conference decided to create an independent national body for recognition and redress. This will aim to financially repair the damage caused to thousands of children.
“We are going to give it the means to accomplish this mission of recognition and reparation and in particular of individualized compensation for victims each according to what will be necessary”, explains Monsignor Eric of Moulins-Beaufort, president of the Conference of Bishops of France. For this, the Church will not draw on the donation of the faithful, but on a compensation fund created in September which will be filled by the contribution of the Bishops, the sale of real estate and also by loans if necessary.
