Sexual assault scandal: Telus stops sponsoring Hockey Canada’s men’s hockey programs.

Telecommunications company Telus announces that it will not sponsor Hockey Canada’s men’s hockey programs for the 2022-2023 season, including the upcoming world junior tournament.

The move comes as Hockey Canada continues to defend its handling of sexual assault allegations and how money was paid out in the lawsuits.

Telus says it is “deeply discouraged” by Hockey Canada’s lack of action and commitment to drive the necessary culture change. The company says it is committed to putting in place systemic measures to make hockey safer for everyone.

Telus’ decision follows similar announcements from Tim Hortons and Scotiabank.

Tim Hortons announced Wednesday that it will not be sponsoring any Hockey Canada men’s programming this season, including the Junior Men’s World Championship in Halifax and Moncton.

Scotiabank says its Hockey Canada sponsorship break, first announced in June, will remain in effect for the entire 2022-23 season.

Called again to comment on the matter on Thursday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made no secret of his exasperation with the organization’s inaction and opened the door to Hockey Canada possibly being replaced.

“They’re not the only people in Canada you could see leading an organization like Hockey Canada,” he said.

“At some point, people will wake up. I don’t know what else we can say except that we have lost faith in Hockey Canada, it’s time they left! »
