Sexual assault: Peter Nygard withdraws his investigation for release

Accused of sexual assault and forcible confinement in Quebec, the Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard has given up his investigation for release which was to take place Thursday at the Montreal courthouse.

The decision was not surprising since the 80-year-old man is currently being held in Manitoba and another detention order is in effect in Ontario, also on charges of crimes of a sexual nature.

The accused appeared by videoconference Thursday from a detention center in Toronto.

Before the Court, the Crown prosecutor, Me Jérôme Laflamme, said he was ready to choose a trial date.

The ex-clothing designer will therefore return before a judge in Montreal on September 8.

In this criminal case in Quebec, the arrest warrant alleges that between November 1, 1997 and November 15, 1998, in Montreal, Peter Nygard sexually assaulted a person and “constrained, imprisoned or seized him by force”.

In Ontario, Peter Nygard has been charged with six counts of sexual assault and three counts of forcible confinement for events dating back to the late 1980s and mid-2000s. He also faces several counts in the States United States, including sex trafficking and fraud, in a scheme that took place over decades and involved at least a dozen victims in the United States, Canada and the Bahamas, said the New York prosecutor’s office.

Further details will follow.
