(Montreal) Opening statements began today in New York in the civil case against Canadian filmmaker Paul Haggis, who is charged with sexual assault.

Publicist Haleigh Breest accuses the screenwriter of Crash and of Million Dollar Baby of raping her in her apartment in 2013. Haggis says the relationship was consensual.
The plaintiff’s attorney, Zoe Salzman, criticized Haggis for using his notoriety to prey on vulnerable young women.
