(Ottawa) A woman who accused former NDP MP Romeo Saganash of sexual assault has filed a civil suit, saying she never wanted criminal prosecutors to divert her accusation into a drug program. restorative justice in Manitoba.
Carmen Roy, who demanded that her identity be disclosed in this case, claims to have been sexually assaulted a year ago by the former federal MP from northern Quebec. Mme Roy maintains that she now lives with “psychiatric, psychological, emotional and physical after-effects”.
In a presentation of the request filed on Tuesday, Mme Roy publicly details sexual assault allegations for the first time.
None of the allegations have been tested in court and no statement of defense has been filed in court.
Ethan Pollock, Mr. Saganash’s lawyer, declined to comment, but previously said his client was presumed innocent. He also asked that Mr. Saganash’s privacy be respected.
Winnipeg police arrested Mr. Saganash at the end of last June and charged him with sexual assault for events that occurred in that city on June 1er May 2023. Last October, authorities referred the case to the Manitoba Restorative Justice Centre.
Now, Mme Roy maintains that she was never consulted on the decision to place Mr. Saganash on restorative justice, which prevented her from having the opportunity to provide a victim impact statement, reads the statement of the request for civil proceedings.
