A few months after the publication of the Sauvé report on sexual abuse in the Church, the compensation of the victims is organized, while it is estimated that more than 330,000 children have suffered sexual violence.
Published on October 5, 2021, the Sauvé Report on sexual violence in the Church estimated that nearly 330,000 children were victims of sexual assault or rape within the institution, by nearly 3,000 sexual predatory priests recorded in France between 1950 and 2020. The two commissions in charge of compensating victims are organized on the basis of a scale which takes into account the seriousness of the facts, the psychological consequences and the reaction of the Church, for a compensation of up to 60,000 euros per person.
Of the 330,000 presumed victims, more than a thousand cases have been filed to date. For Véronique Margron, president of the conference of monks and nuns of France (CORREF), it is “terribly little” and it is urgent that the vast majority of victims can claim compensation. The theologian believes that what is at stake lies in the recognition by the Church of the words of the victims and of the extreme gravity of the trauma suffered: “We have to accept this, whatever we give will be ridiculous because lifeshe, is shattered”.
