Forty sex offenders at high risk of reoffending were arrested across Quebec during the month of April, as part of a vast operation headed by the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).
As of April 2, the provincial police, in conjunction with 24 municipal police forces across the province, carried out a series of interventions with these individuals due to their high risk of recidivism. The operation will officially conclude on Friday.
These interventions aimed more specifically at bringing to justice those who, among the targeted people, contravened the conditions to which they were subject under an order. Officers were also able to arrest those subject to warrants.
“This effort will have, as such, allowed numerous interventions relating to omissions to respect orders regarding registration in the national register of sex offenders,” specifies the SQ in a press release Thursday.
The 40 people arrested as part of this operation have appeared in court in recent weeks, or will do so soon.
“Several cases have demonstrated the positive impact of the work concerned, including this one. This will certainly not be the last operation of its kind,” warns Captain Steve Cadieux, deputy director of the Criminal Investigation Department of the SQ, in the same press release.
