Mr Nygard, dressed in an orange jumpsuit and wearing a blue sanitary mask, took notes during the brief appearance. He was represented by a Montreal lawyer, who waived the reading of the indictment. The lawyer also did not specify whether his client would eventually opt for a trial by judge alone or by jury.
According to the arrest warrant issued in Montreal, 80-year-old Peter Nygard is charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of forcible confinement, involving the same victim. The crimes were allegedly committed between 1er November 1997 and November 15, 1998.
A publication ban has been requested. In addition, the Crown opposed the release on bail, a technical formality since Mr. Nygard is already detained – he already faces charges for sex crimes in Toronto and the United States.
In Montreal, the case should return to court on April 4.
