A lone gunman injured several people at an auditorium in the southwestern German city of Heidelberg on Monday, police said.
Police said in a brief statement that the attacker was dead, but did not provide details on how it happened. They previously asked people on Twitter to avoid the Neuenheimer Feld district of Heidelberg, where the city’s university campus is located.
Police did not say how many people were injured or to what extent. The university’s press office declined to give details of the shooting and referred all inquiries to police.
German news agency dpa, citing unidentified security sources, says the gunman took his own life.
Police said the weapon used in the shooting was a long-barreled gun.
Heidelberg is located south of Frankfurt and has around 160,000 inhabitants. Its university is one of the best known in Germany.
