Several waterways are under surveillance due to expected rain in Quebec

The rain expected in the coming hours in Quebec is forcing authorities to place several rivers whose levels are rising under surveillance.

Friday morning, the Ministry of Public Security was already reporting average flooding of the Noire River, upstream of the road bridge in Sainte-Émélie-de-l’Énergie, in Lanaudière.

Six watercourses were also under surveillance, namely Lake Théodore in Val-Morin, the Beaurivage River near Saint-Étienne, the Chaudière River near Saint-Lambert-de-Lauzon and the Sartigan dam, the Nicolet River near the Bulstrode, the Ouareau River at the head of Dorwin Falls and the Famine River near Saint-Georges.

According to the Ministry of Public Safety, “rain, combined with melting snow, could have consequences on the level of certain watercourses.”

Environment Canada warns that a low pressure system could dump 30 to 50 mm of rain by Saturday for many areas west of the St. Lawrence River.

In a rain warning, the federal agency stressed that the rain, combined with mild temperatures, will favor the melting of the snow cover still present in places.

Thus, flooding is possible in the lowlands, she said.
