Four Quebec artists or groups are on the short list of nominees for the Polaris Prize, unveiled Thursday.
Elisapie (Inuktitut), Charlotte Cardin (99 Nights), Allison Russell (The Returner), a Montrealer now living in the United States, and the female punk-rock group NOBRO (Set Your Pussy Free) are among the 10 finalists in the running for this prize which rewards the best Canadian album released between 1er April 2023 and the 1er May 2024, all genres combined.
Also nominated are BAMBII (INFINITY CLUB), The Beaches (Blame My Ex), DijahSB (The Flower That Knew), Cindy Lee (Diamond Jubilee), TOBi (Panic) and Jeremy Dutcher (MotewolonuwokThe latter, who sings in the Wolastoq (Maliseet) language, already won the Polaris Prize in 2018.
At the long list stage, almost half of the 40 albums selected were the work of Quebecers by origin or adoption.
The grand winner will be announced on September 17 at the legendary Massey Hall in Toronto.
Last year, Debby Friday, an artist born in Nigeria and raised in Montreal, was recognized for her debut album, Good Luck.
