An impressive tide of black dresses, mixed with ermine dresses, poured onto the steps of the Paris courthouse on Tuesday February 13. Several hundred magistrates and lawyers paid tribute to Robert Badinter, the former Minister of Justice, who died last Friday, noted the franceinfo journalists present.

Robert Badinter practiced for 45 years at the Paris bar. All generations of lawyers were brought together, the young people saying they were inspired by the “tutelary figure”there “compass”. Others, older like Henri Leclerc, the French criminal lawyer and friend of Robert Badinter, who spoke to emphasize the importance “may his bar be the first to pay tribute to him” and recalled their last conversation: “We only talked about one thing, prison overcrowding and the horror of prisons.”

Everyone remembers the great activist, the defender of freedoms who was Robert Badinter. He was also, for them, the greatest Keeper of the Seals. A few speeches took place to discuss the struggles that Robert Badinter considered major, and which remain relevant today, such as the living conditions of prisoners in particular. A minute of silence followed, then long applause resonated in the courtyard of the Palace.

The public can continue to sign the collection of grievances at the Paris chancellery until Tuesday evening. The Minister of Justice Éric Dupond-Moretti announced the extension in view of the large crowds this weekend. A national tribute to Robert Badinter will be paid on Wednesday February 14 at Place Vendôme, in front of the Ministry of Justice.
