Several countries condemn the “transfer” of North Korean weapons to Russia

(Washington) The United States, the European Union (EU) and nearly 50 countries accused North Korea on Tuesday of delivering missiles to Russia, demanding an immediate end to this cooperation.

Last week, the American administration of Joe Biden denounced these deliveries of missiles used, according to it, by Russia in its recent large-scale attacks on Ukraine, Pyongyang having long been the subject of international sanctions for its activities military and nuclear.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, EU foreign minister Josep Borrell and 47 foreign ministers condemned North Korean support for Russia in “the strongest possible terms”.

“The transfer of these weapons increases the suffering of the Ukrainian people, supports Russia’s war of aggression and undermines the global non-proliferation system,” they said in a joint statement.

According to them, the delivery of missiles constitutes a “blatant” violation of sanctions imposed on North Korea by the UN Security Council, of which Russia is a permanent member.

“We are closely monitoring what Russia provides to North Korea in exchange for these weapons,” added the signatories of the press release, calling on both countries to respect the UN resolutions and to “immediately cease all activities that violate them” .

The 47 signatory countries are close partners of the United States, including South Korea, Japan and Israel, which Washington supports militarily in its devastating war in Gaza despite pressing international calls for a ceasefire.

Israel launched a bombing campaign and a major ground offensive in Gaza after the unprecedented bloody attack perpetrated on its soil on October 7 by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas.
