A plane suddenly lost altitude in mid-flight on Monday March 11. Passengers who were not restrained were thrown to the ceiling of the cabin, all describing a feeling of free fall. A total of 50 people were injured and 13 were taken to hospital. The plane, a Boeing 727, was flying from Sydney (Australia) to Auckland (New Zealand). According to the company, a technical incident is the cause of this loss of altitude. For his part, the pilot would have mentioned the loss of control of the aircraft to the passengers.
The third incident on a Boeing in three weeks
The analysis of black boxes is awaited by specialists. “Was it really the flight control system that malfunctioned? (…) or was it turbulence?”, questions Xavier Tytelman, aeronautics expert. This new incident is the third on a Boeing in a few weeks, after a door unhooked in mid-flight and the loss of a wheel during takeoff.
