This is the most serious attack committed against public forces in Colombia since Gustavo Petro took office. Seven police officers were killed on Friday September 2 in a “bomb attack”announced the President, the first from the left in the history of Colombia.

The head of state initially announced eight victims, but the police’s final toll was revised to seven dead. “I strongly condemn (this) bomb attack”wrote Gustavo Petro on Twitter. “Solidarity with their families”he added.

Since taking office at the beginning of August, Gustavo Petro wants to put in place a policy of “total peace”. In order to break with the old doctrine of “the enemy within”on August 12 he replaced the entire military command, including the police.

The attack took place in San Luis in a rural area, located more than two hours from Neiva, the largest city in the department of Huila, in the southwest of the country. It was a “attack on a police patrol”a police spokeswoman told AFP, adding that explosives had been used and that the police had been killed by “gunfire”.

The authorities have not yet provided any information on the perpetrators of these acts. According to the prosecutor’s office, the officers were returning to their barracks in San Luis when they fell into a “ambush”.
