Seven injured in explosion at Newfoundland refinery

Seven people are hospitalized after an explosion at a refinery in Come By Chance, Newfoundland, about 150 kilometers west of Saint John, police said.

RCMP Corporal Jolene Garland said earlier Friday that six people were injured, one seriously.

Ms Garland said that around 6.20 p.m. (local time), the number of injured rose to seven.

Braya Renewable Fuels, owner of the refinery, said by email that the explosion occurred in the late afternoon and that emergency crews were still on site. She says the situation has been brought under control.

The company said authorities have been notified of the explosion and will cooperate fully with their investigation.

Cresta Fund Management purchased the refinery last November and renamed it Braya Renewable Fuels, with the stated goal of converting the facility to produce renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel.
