The firefighters were called shortly before 10 a.m., said William Murray, head of the prevention section at the Montreal Fire Safety Service (SIM). The flames originated on a balcony at the back of a three-storey building housing a pharmacy and several apartments.
The fire spread to the roof. Just over 100 firefighters and around 30 vehicles went to the scene to fight the blaze.
A firefighter was injured during the intervention. He was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The occupants of the accommodations are safe and sound. In all, seven families were supported by the Red Cross.
