At least seven civilians were killed in a Russian strike on Tuesday, October 1, near a market in the center of Kherson, a large city in southern Ukraine located near the front line, the regional prosecutor’s office announced. “Three women and four men” died in this attack carried out “probably” with the help of artillery, announces the prosecution. Three people were also injured, according to the same source.
The strike hit an area “near a market and a bus stop”detailed the prosecution, specifying that it had opened an investigation. The region’s governor, Oleksandr Prokudin, published a video of the site on Telegram in which several bodies can be seen lying on the ground. The head of the municipal military administration, Roman Mrochko, for his part affirmed on Telegram that the Russian attack had left four injured: three women aged 33 to 68, as well as a 65-year-old man.
The only regional capital to have been occupied by Russia at the start of its invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, the city of Kherson which had nearly 280,000 inhabitants before the war was liberated with part of the eponymous region by the Ukrainian army in November of the same year. The city, which is located on the western bank of the Dnieper River, has since been regularly hit by strikes from Russian troops located on the other side, on the eastern bank.
The Russian army also claimed on Tuesday to have captured a new locality in eastern Ukraine, that of Kruty Iar, located about ten kilometers southeast of the city of Pokrovsk. For weeks, Russian troops have been approaching Pokrovsk, now largely evacuated and subject to frequent bombardments.
