In new court documents, supermarket chain Metro accuses Loblaw and its parent company of conspiring to implicate it in an alleged bread price-fixing scheme.
Metro has filed a statement of defense in the Ontario Superior Court, in response to a class action that implicates it and several other retailers in the alleged conspiracy.
The supermarket chain denies being involved in a bread price-fixing cartel, which is also the subject of an investigation by the Federal Competition Bureau.
Loblaw said Metro’s allegations are ridiculous and false.
Bakery supplier Canada Bread recently filed its own statement of defense in the class action, in which it denied participating in a broad conspiracy to fix the price of bread.
In June, Canada Bread pleaded guilty to four counts of price fixing under the Competition law and was fined 50 million.
