(Madrid) Sergio Busquets will end “a memorable adventure” of almost two decades with FC Barcelona, he announced on Wednesday.
Busquets, whose contract will expire at the end of the campaign, confirmed his decision in a video posted on his social networks.
Busquets, who is 34, joined the Catalan outfit in 2005 and was promoted to the B team led by Pep Guardiola after two seasons at the Under-19s. He allowed the B team to be promoted and eventually started his career with the main team in 2008.
He played 718 career games with FC Barcelona, allowing him to climb to third place in this chapter behind Xavi and the holder of the mark, Lionel Messi. Busquets won 31 titles with Barca, including three in the UEFA Champions League and eight in the Spanish La Liga.
He is set to conclude his career with a final La Liga title, as FC Barcelona have a 13-point lead at the top of the general classification with five games to negotiate.
Busquets, one of the best defensive midfielders in club history, scored 18 goals and had 40 assists.
Busquets did not specify where he plans to play next season. FC Barcelona’s last match will be against Celta Vigo, in La Liga, on June 4.
