This story, adapted many times for the stage and the cinema, tells the story of a little orphan named Annie who is chosen to spend some time in the home of a billionaire. A situation that is not to please the manager of the orphanage, Mr.she Hannigan, a bitter woman who has a serious fondness for the bottle …

Joined by Press While in Normandy, Serge Denoncourt said he was delighted with this new project. “I really wanted to work with children again. I did it with The chorists and I love that. Children are blank pages. My grumpy side makes them laugh. I love this playground atmosphere! And this piece will be the female counterpart of Choristers, where there were only boys in the cast. ”

For this musical, Serge Denoncourt decided to keep the historical aspect by setting the action in New York of the 1930s. “I like period shows with the costumes, and all. I saw a more modern version ofAnnie in the movies and frankly, it was not good. There is a nostalgic side to this story that must be preserved. ”

The prolific director says he saw the play on Broadway over 30 years ago.

“I remember having fun, but for the rest, we can not say that there will be much left in my staging. “He had also very much enjoyed the film released in the early 1980s,” especially for Carol Burnett [interprète de Mlle Hannigan], which is fantastic. ”

Serge Denoncourt is due to return to Quebec in mid-December. It is at this moment that he will embark on a round of auditions to find his cast of orphans and, above all, his Annie. As for the roles of adults, the director already has a small idea of those with whom he wishes to work, but does not want to reveal anything for the moment.

“One thing is certain, I’m happy to put on a show that will be intergenerational, where grandparents can come with their grandchildren. This was the case with The choristers and I loved seeing this audience in the room. It’s not just a show; it is a moment for the spectators. I like the idea of these shows where everyone is happy. Hope it acts as a balm after the pandemic. Annie, it’s a great time to get together in a theater. ”

Musical comedy Annie will be presented from June 22, 2022 at the Théâtre St-Denis and at the Salle Albert-Rousseau in Quebec City from August 12. Tickets will go on sale November 12.
