(Belgrade) A teenager opened fire on Wednesday in Serbia at a school in the center of the capital, Belgrade, killing eight children and a school guard, police said.
Six other children as well as a teacher were injured.
Police report the shooter is a student at the school and was born in 2009. He was arrested in the schoolyard.
Authorities said in a statement that they received a call about the shooting at Vladislav Ribnikar Elementary School around 8:40 a.m. The suspect apparently fired multiple shots from his father’s gun at a teacher, d other students and the school caretaker.
Serbian media reported that terrified parents arrived at the school trying to find their children.
Local media footage from the scene showed a commotion outside the school as police led away the suspect, whose head was covered as officers led him to a car parked on the street.
Mass shootings in Serbia and the wider Balkan region are extremely rare and none have been reported in schools in recent years. In the last mass shooting, a Balkan war veteran killed 13 people in 2013 in a village in central Serbia.
