A record that does not amuse the French: in September, it rained more than in the last forty years at the same time. An effect of global warming, explains the weather journalist of France Télévisions, Sébastien Thomas.
After a spring and summer described as “rotten” by many French people, September leaves no better impression. In Vivonne, in Vienne, near Poitiers, this year there was 17% more rain than in a normal September. “Autumn came early, it was brutal”says a passerby.
The last few weeks have been rainy all over the country. On September 4, in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), the Old Port was flooded in a matter of minutes. The equivalent of three weeks of rain fell that day. A few days later, storms and wind hit the entire east of the country. Cannes also suffered floods a few days ago. “There is more and more humidity in the air, because of global warming”explains France Télévisions weather reporter Sébastien Thomas. The heat of the oceans is rising, and generating significant precipitation, he adds. The same phenomenon has impacted all of Europe.
