Sentenced to 12 years in penitentiary for shooting his partner to get her to have an abortion

A Montreal man who shot his partner to force her to have an abortion will have to spend 12 years in detention, a judge has ordered, warning that those who attack pregnant women will have to suffer serious consequences.

“A pregnant woman must be protected, encouraged and supported. Violent husbands and boyfriends must understand that if they hit a pregnant woman, they will arouse the ire of a harsh judicial system,” commented Judge Dennis Galiatsatos this Monday at the Montreal courthouse.

Albano Pierre, 33, received a significant sentence for a series of crimes committed in 2021, which began with the discharge of a firearm.

This is because at the time, Pierre did not want a child with the woman he was seeing. So, when she told him about her pregnancy, Pierre got angry before pointing his revolver at the victim and then firing, aiming next to her.

“Are you sure you don’t want to have an abortion?” Pierre then said to him.

The woman ultimately kept the child despite the trauma of the event.

“She was deprived of having a beautiful pregnancy, which, under normal circumstances, should be one of the most memorable experiences in a woman’s life,” lamented the judge.

A few weeks after the events, Pierre attacked the woman again by kidnapping her and beating her for an alleged affair of infidelity.

And between these two events, Pierre had committed another crime, this time by renting a firearm for $800 to Marly Edouard, a woman who wanted to defend herself against a violent ex-partner. Less than a week later, the woman was found dead in the parking lot of her home, with the gun nearby.

“Even if he did not lend his weapon to a hitman, the potential for violence still remained predictable,” noted the judge, recalling that the police investigation remained open in this case.

One of the theories would be that the woman ended her life with Pierre’s firearm, which the latter always kept in his Luis Vutton bag before giving it to M.me Edward.

“The revolver constituted a danger to society,” recalled the judge. Gun-related crimes expose Montrealers to serious dangers. The safety of the public must be carefully preserved.”

Found guilty, among other things, of armed assault, discharging a firearm, arms trafficking, kidnapping and threats, Pierre hoped to get away with 7 or 8 years in the penitentiary.

Except that his crimes were so serious that such a sentence would be too lenient, according to the judge who rather leaned on the side of the Crown, who asked for 10 to 12 years of incarceration.

Taking into account preventive detention, Pierre will have finished serving his sentence in a little over 8 years. Except that his problems will not end there since he will then be deported from the country, given that he is not a Canadian citizen.
