Senegalese international Pape Gueye has been suspended by Fifa following a dispute over a transfer between his club Marseille (French Ligue 1) and the English club Watford (Premier League), announced Aliou Cissé, the Senegalese coach, Friday January 14 after the Senegal-Guinea match.

“We actually knew about it five minutes before kick-off,” Aliou Cissé said at a press conference. In question, a pre-agreement signed with Watford before joining Olympique de Marseille in 2021. “This is another problem that has happened to us like so many other problems since the start of this AFCON”, deplores the coach already affected by numerous absences due to the Covid since the start of the competition (Idrissa Gueye and Edouard Mendy among others).

Unsure of being able to recover his midfielder for the rest of the competition, the Teranga Lions coach remained evasive on this subject. “We have to pray to get him back for the whole tournament. It’s not easy yet”, he says.

A new blow for Senegal which is experiencing difficulties in this edition. After a sluggish victory against Zimbabwe (1-0), the Lions conceded a draw against Guinea on Friday (0-0). They will face Malawi on Tuesday January 18 at 5 p.m., with or without Pape Gueye.
