If the invitations from the Minister of the Interior are regular, offering a lunch to the 49 senators of the Law Committee is unusual, especially a few days before the vote.

Gérald Darmanin is going all out to try to pass his Immigration law, while Élisabeth Borne has disavowed him on a possible withdrawal of article 3, which provides for the regularization of undocumented workers in professions in tension. Ten days before the bill returns to the Senate, the Minister of the Interior therefore invites all the senators working on the file to lunch on Thursday October 26 at noon.
These are in fact members of the Law Commission. A ‘seduction’ operation which arouses distrust among the Republicans, the main group in the Senate, who would only send two representatives, the president of the Commission and the rapporteur of the text. “It looks strangely like a seduction operation”protests Bruno Retailleau. “The law is not made around lunch tables” but in the hemicycles, the president of the right-wing group gets annoyed.
The socialists will boycott the meeting
Certainly, an invitation from the Minister of the Interior is not unprecedented. There have already been working meetings but inviting the 49 members of the Law Commission to lunch, a few days before their appearance in the hemicycle, is unusual.
“The LR just want to pay off the government”, comments an executive from the Les Centristes group, who does not hesitate to go to Beauvau to discuss the bill one last time. Communists and ecologists will also be present, but not the socialists who are boycotting this meeting considered to be “a simulacrum of consultation”.
