In Bolivia, eight out of ten women have experienced some form of violence at least once in their life. Many of them are learning to defend themselves in the town of El Alto, near La Paz, the country’s capital.
Every year, they demonstrate for their rights. In Bolivia, eight out of ten women have experienced some form of violence at least once in their life. In the town of El Alto, near La Paz, the Bolivian capital, self-defense classes are held in a gym. They are only reserved for women. Lidia, a 56-year-old native, is at the origin of this training. Nine years ago, she was the victim of a violent attack.
“They strangled us”
“My husband and I were surprised at home by several guys. Before leaving with objects, they strangled us”, confides Lidia. This trauma then gave her an idea: to teach women self-defense. To better transmit, she can count on teacherss thisblack taekwondo frames. Over the past nine years, more than 35,000 Bolivian women have taken Lidia’s self-defense classes.
