Sudanese security forces fired tear gas canisters at thousands of anti-coup protesters converging on the presidential palace in Khartoum, Sunday January 2.
Since General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane’s coup on October 25, 54 protesters have been killed in the crackdown and hundreds injured, according to a pro-democracy doctors’ union. An assessment that does not prevent new parades from coming out regularly to the cries of “the soldiers at the barracks” and “Power to the people”.
Earlier Sunday, the security forces had blocked the bridges connecting Khartoum to its suburbs and the main axes of the capital, as with each call to demonstrate, sometimes perched on armored vehicles armed with imposing machine guns. In addition, the authorities had again cut off access to mobile internet before the demonstration.
