On the morning of Friday May 13, in Colomiers (Haute-Garonne), the Secours populaire was once again overwhelmed by the growing demand from people in need.
Faced with a substantial decline in purchasing power and a sharp increase in prices, the French believe on average to be short of 490 euros to end the month. More and more of them are turning to Secours Populaire. Touring supermarkets to collect unsold items and then redistribute them to the 1,400 families in need is the task of the association’s volunteers.
Soaring prices, 4.8% in one year, and the decline in purchasing power lead many families to turn to the association for the first time. People who previously managed to get by now have no choice but to go to the Secours Populaire. For some, it is a return to the association after years of not having been in need. Since January, a 10% increase in people using to the association was observed.
