Secondary residences: they attract the French
Secondary residences: they attract the French
(France 2)

For Ascension weekend, the big cities emptied and the French decided to take advantage of it. Some have chosen their second home, which remains a dream for many French people.

Treating yourself to a small house by the sea, in the mountains or inland is a dream. France is the country in Europe where there are the most second homes: 3.7 million, or almost 10% of the real estate stock. Two out of three are owned by people over 60 with strong purchasing power. These residences are mainly located on the coast, at 40%, and at altitude, at 16%.

They also still attract the French despite prices which have increased in 2023 with + 11% for apartments and + 8% for houses. Second homes in France attract well beyond the borders: one in ten belongs to a person living abroad, 27% British, 12% Italians and 12% Belgians. Owning a second home is a luxury far from being accessible to everyone, but the dream is still possible.
