Canadian residents made 78.3 million trips in the second quarter, up 7.7 million trips compared to the same quarter in 2022, Statistics Canada revealed on Friday.
The majority of these trips, 89.6%, were made within the country. Canadian residents made 70.2 million domestic trips during this same period, up 5.2 million compared to the second quarter of 2022.
During the second quarter of 2023, domestic travel spending by Canadian residents was $17.7 billion, up 2.6% from the second quarter of 2022.
Canadian residents took 6.1 million trips to the United States during the second quarter of 2023, an increase of 2.2 million compared to the number of trips recorded during the same quarter of 2022.
From April to June, Canadian residents returned from two million trips to overseas countries. This is a higher number than that observed in the second quarter of 2022. Spending by Canadian resident travelers in overseas countries during this period increased by 35.9% compared to the same quarter in 2022 .
Spending by international travelers in Canada totaled almost $7 billion in the second quarter. This is almost double the spending recorded during the same quarter in 2022.
Total spending by visitors increased by 11.1% compared to the $6.3 billion spent in the period from April to June 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.
United States residents spent $3.8 billion during their visits to Canada, an increase of 94.2% compared to spending recorded during the same quarter in 2022.
Spending by overseas travelers jumped nearly 90% from the $1.7 billion spent during the second quarter of 2022.
