The Canadian junior team gets another helping hand from the National Hockey League.
Hockey Canada announced Thursday that the Seattle Kraken have agreed to loan forward Shane Wright to the team ahead of the start of their selection camp in Moncton, New Brunswick, for the upcoming World Junior Hockey Championship.
The Kraken selected Wright with the fourth overall pick last draft. Wright recently returned to the NHL after a conditioning stint in the American League. He scored his first goal on Tuesday, against the Montreal Canadiens.
Wright was on the Canadian roster for the 2022 edition which was postponed due to COVID-19. He didn’t play in August, when the tournament was finally replayed in Edmonton.
He previously helped Canada win gold at the Under-18 Championship in 2021, when he finished the tournament tied for the lead in scoring with teammate Connor Bedard with 14 points, including nine goals, in seven games .
Wright’s addition to the selection camp comes after the Los Angeles Kings loaned defenseman Brandt Clarke, another key player in the 2021 Under-18 edition.
The selection camp will get under way on Friday. The tournament will be played in Moncton and Halifax beginning Dec. 26.
