Scott Arniel named head coach of the Winnipeg Jets

(Winnipeg) Scott Arniel was named the new head coach of the Winnipeg Jets on Friday.

The team shared the news on their social networks.

The Jets said a news conference with Arniel and general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff will be held Monday.

Arniel replaces Rick Bowness, who retired after the team was eliminated in the first round of this year’s playoffs against the Colorado Avalanche.

Arniel, 61, joined the Jets as an assistant coach when Bowness was hired in July 2022.

With Bowness, the Jets made the playoffs two seasons in a row, but lost in the first round on each occasion.

Bowness sat out twice this season and in his absence, as interim head coach, Arniel went 10-5-2 behind the bench.

Arniel began his coaching career in 1995, after 18 years as a player. His first head coaching position in the NHL was with the Columbus Blue Jackets, for the 2010-11 season. He was behind the team’s bench for a season and a half.
